What the hell is a heating grate?  That big?  I've never seen that in a domestic house!

My family once lived in the real-world counterpart of this dilapidated postwar neighborhood, and our house had just such a grate.  It must have been a 1950s thing.  I admit, having a giant hot metal grate in the hallway was weird, but since the house was small, all of the rooms got heated very efficiently.

Though I think we all burned ourselves at least once.

Weeeeeeeeird.  I do remember seeing grates like this (usually long ones, about three feet by one foot) along the walls of old houses, but never this.  It's ... fascinating.  If I weren't so lazy, I'd delve into an internet investigation of floor grate usage and construction history.

That reminds me, I do need to add labels to our cooker dials!
